How to Determine What's Copyright Protected

Planning to quote extensively from someone else's work or looking to republish a book that's (hopefully) in the public domain? Neat tool, Atilla. Also very useful (if not as easy to implement) is the referenced article, "How to Investigate the Copyright Status of a Work" (http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ22.pdf). Tracking down copyright status can be a real challenge!
