Escaping Arizona
August 01, 2012 by Sam Henrie, President
In Tucson we have seven months of beautiful weather, October through April, and five months of excruciatingly hot weather, May through September. So, we’re right in the middle of the worst of the heat now. This time of year many of us head out of town. Atilla and family took three weeks and drove cross-country. Even though they report that they had a wonderful trip, due to unusual weather in the Midwest and East they didn’t really escape the heat. I, on the other hand, got lucky temperature-wise, visiting Seattle with my mother and brother for a few days. It was in the 70s during the day, and there always seemed to be a cool breeze and pleasant intermittent cloud cover. I’d never spent more than a few hours in the city before, and was just gobsmacked by what a beautiful place it is. I’ll be looking for excuses to go back. The trip was a complete change of environment for me—cool instead of hot, humid instead of dry, lush and coastal instead of desert … hotel room on the 28th floor instead of home and office both on the ground floor. (See the view above from my hotel room window.) It’s amazing how a vacation from your familiar environment can give you a new perspective on your work. I had time to think about some of Wheatmark’s opportunities and challenges with a detached outsider’s view, and time to discuss these opportunities and challenges with my wonderful mother and brother (true outsiders to the business). Now I’m back in Tucson, rested and reenergized, ready to implement some new ideas to make the coming year even better for our authors and for Wheatmark. Hope you had time to take one or more amazing vacations this summer, and came back with batteries recharged and tons of new ideas about how to sell more books.
