Why Wheatmark Should Be Your Book Publisher

Most self-publishing services (especially the big print-on-demand self-publishing services) operate on volume—their focus is on signing up as many authors as they can, and then getting them through the publishing process as quickly as possible. Once an author has signed with them they have no incentive to serve that author further, and in fact consider it bad for the bottom line to allot too much time or too many resources to their existing customers.

The unfortunate result for those authors who choose to publish with these companies: little actual control over the production of their book, an unsatisfying customer service experience, and—worst of all—a published book that falls well below the author’s expectations and industry standards.

Wheatmark is different. Our business model is based on customer satisfaction, client referrals, returning authors, and book sales. We want both your book and your experience publishing with us to exceed your expectations so that you’ll tell other writers about us and publish with us again and again yourself. That’s why we’ve designed our services to help you achieve your unique publishing goals.

  • At Wheatmark, the author always comes first.
We understand that you have invested incredible amounts of time and energy into writing your book, and we want that investment to pay off for you. That’s why we take a big-picture approach to publishing—we learn about you, your book, and your publishing goals, and we then provide you with the services and options that will best suit your particular project.

  • We spend our own money selling and marketing books that show promise.
As anyone in publishing will tell you, marketing is the name of the game. If a book is marketed well, it sells. If it isn’t marketed well, it doesn’t. At Wheatmark we offer effective marketing products and services that you can use to get the sales of your book started. If your marketing efforts are successful enough to generate sales of 2,000 copies, your book will be enrolled in our Great Expectations program. Once in Great Expectations we support you by investing our own sales expertise and marketing dollars in your book.

  • We always accept returns and sell your book at industry-standard discounts.
We encourage bookstores and other volume book buyers to carry your book by always offering full industry-standard discounts and returnability to them. This is crucial. Bookstores and other volume book buyers need to know that they will make money on your book before they will carry it. This can only happen if they get enough of a discount off the retail price, and can return any unsold copies for refund. That’s the way the book publishing industry has worked for decades.

  • We provide exceptional distribution for your book.
Your book is made available through numerous online retailers, such as BarnesandNoble.com, Amazon.com, Borders.com, Target.com, BooksAMillion.com, and others. One of the two major U.S. book wholesalers, Ingram Book Company or Baker & Taylor, will list your book, enabling virtually any bookstore or volume book buyer in the world to order it. In most cases your book will also be listed by Bertram Books, a leading wholesaler in Great Britain. We also make your book available for sale on the Wheatmark bookstore.

  • We design an eye-catching cover for your book.
Your book is prejudged by its cover. Wheatmark has a reputation for designing stunning book covers, each one unique. Also, we don’t just focus on how the book will look on the shelf; we also pay attention to how its thumbnail image will look on online bookstores. And, we do a free cover copy tune-up, something other self-publishing services charge extra for. Browse the covers on the Wheatmark bookstore and see for yourself.

  • We custom design your book's interior.
We design a custom layout for your book’s text and never make you choose from a limited list of templates.

  • Royalties.
The royalties from book sales are paid to you quarterly. Wheatmark pays royalties based on publisher print receipts, which are the payments we receive for the sale of the book, less any returns. You will receive 40% of publisher print receipts when the book is sold through Wheatmark’s bookstore at the full retail price and 20% on all other sales. We pay for the printing of all copies.

  • We give you better author discounts.
You get discounts of between 40% and 75% off of the retail price of your book (depending on the size of the order), much higher than the big print-on-demand self-publishing services’ discounts.

  • We offer you one of the best values in self-publishing.
This allows you to save more money for sales and marketing. The basic publishing service with Wheatmark is just $1,299. The price includes personal author support; book layout; cover design; cover copy tune-up; electronic page and cover proofs; title registrations (ISBN, LCCN, EAN barcode); distribution through Ingram Book Company or Baker & Taylor, Amazon.com, and major online bookstores; sample copies; sales sheets; substantial author discounts; and royalties management.

  • We offer premier editorial services for your book.
For your book to get reader recommendations and good reviews, it needs to be carefully edited. We offer a full range of editorial services, as well as an editorial analysis to determine the level of editing that will best benefit your book.

  • We give you highly personalized service.
We’re not one of the huge online publishing mills. You work with one personable and accessible book editor who deals with all aspects of your book’s publication. Just read our published author testimonials to see what authors have had to say about working with Wheatmark.

  • You keep the rights to your book.
You retain all rights to your book. You are the copyright owner and your name will be listed on the copyright page of your book. Your contract with Wheatmark is nonexclusive, and you may cancel your agreement with us at any time.

What Authors Say...

For any author looking to get a professional head start, Wheatmark is the place to begin. Having been published by both "traditional" (Simon & Schuster) and other "print on demand" publishers, this author has found Wheatmark to be not only relatively inexpensive but also exceptionally responsive to my writing needs....
