The Fearing Time

$16.95

Lise Hicks has always been intrigued by the stories that don’t make it into the history books. After she retired, she spent years researching the history of Native American enslavement—digging through archives, walking the land, sheepherding on the Navajo reservation, and learning to weave—in preparation for writing The Fearing Time. When she isn’t traveling the world birdwatching, she splits her time between Tucson, Arizona, and Tacoma, Washington.

Description

New Mexico, 1864. After being starved out of her homeland, twelve-year-old Steady Wind is stolen by Mexican slavers on The Long Walk to Fort Sumner, and sold at auction. Though she and her four-year-old sister, Cactus Flower, are able to stay together through an act of grace, her troubles aren’t over. She’s given a new name. She’s forced to convert to Catholicism. She must speak Spanish. And even as she schemes to find her parents and return to her traditional way of life, her sister begins to forget.

As Steady Wind finds ways to adapt, the Civil War ends and the nation looks westward. When circumstances drastically change once again, she must choose what to cling to—and what to let go of.
